The White German Shepherd Dog began its origins here in America after the influx of the German Shepherd
Dog.
The German Shepherd Dog (GSD) standards specifically states that no German Shepherd Dog
shall be White. This is an Abomination to the Germans and I am sure they do not approve of the use of the German name within
this dogs title. Actually I do not think it is really legal in its use since it was not the Germans who kept or bred these
dogs. These are really American White Shepherds.
Since this dog was an off shoot of the German Shepherd Dog it use to fit the German Shepherd
Dog standards, or at least it started out that way. The AKC registers German Shepherd Dogs here in America. How they
were able to register German Dogs is a bit of a mystery in itself. This gal doesn't think that should be legal
either, but they did and the America public bought pups that were registered under the AMERICAN Kennel Club. As most of you
know I believe that any so called German Shepherds that were registered with the American KC should have been called 'American
Shepherds' but that is another story.
Breeders who bred these German Shepherd Dogs would sometimes get a white pup and AKC had
to register them. Though these pups were not able to be shown and were abominations which were put to sleep, many were
sold and or kept. They all had AKC register papers on them and were supposedly 'pure'. (ok, so now you want to know
why I continue to use the word 'supposedly'. The reason is that anyone could go to the pound and pick up dogs who resembled
their dogs and get AKC papers placed on the dogs. Yes, I am sure this has happened, so I will never say that a dog is pure
because there are too many folks who would do such a thing.)
The folks who were fascinated by these White dogs got together and formed a club. Since
they all had AKC registration papers almost any registry would pick them up as a 'rare' breed (rather the correct wording
would be a 'rare' color). This group of people wanted the name White German Sheperd Dog and so they went to a registry
that would declare them such.
